How to Deposit Using POLi: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough

A plain, bank-agnostic walkthrough of what actually happens when you choose POLi at checkout — plus what to check before you ever try it at an online casino.

This guide walks through exactly what happens, screen by screen, when you use POLi to pay for something online. We're deliberately keeping it generic and bank-agnostic, because — as we cover on the main POLi deposit casinos guide — we couldn't verify that any currently licensed online casino actually offers POLi as a deposit method. So think of this as "here's how a POLi payment would work, if and when a licensed casino does offer it, and what to check before you try" rather than a guarantee it'll be sitting in any particular cashier menu today.

Availability: Not currently verifiedWe have not found a currently licensed online casino that accepts POLi deposits (last checked November 2026). This page explains the general payment flow and what to check, not a confirmed casino cashier process.

Before you start: three things to check

Whatever payment method you end up using, do these three things first:

  • Confirm the method is actually listed on the live cashier page of the casino you're using — not just mentioned on a comparison site.
  • Check your own bank's daily online payment limit in your banking app, since that limit, not POLi, usually governs how much you can send in one go.
  • Check the operator's licensing and terms so you understand where you stand if something goes wrong with a deposit or a payout.

Step-by-step: how a POLi payment works

Step 1 — Choose POLi at checkout

On the merchant's payment page, you'll see a list of accepted methods. If POLi (sometimes shown as "Pay by Bank") is genuinely available, it'll appear as a clickable logo or button alongside options like card payment or e-wallets. Select it to begin.

Step 2 — Pick your bank

POLi will show a list of participating New Zealand banks. You choose the one where you hold the account you want to pay from. If your bank doesn't show up in this list, POLi doesn't have an active agreement with it for that particular merchant, and you can't complete the payment this way — you'd need to fall back to another method.

Step 3 — Log in through your own bank's real website or app

This is the step people are sometimes caught off guard by: you get redirected away from the merchant's site and POLi's own pages, straight to your bank's genuine login screen. Check the address bar — it should show your bank's actual domain, not POLi's or the merchant's. This redirect is the whole point of open banking: your username and password never touch POLi or the merchant at all.

Step 4 — Choose the account and confirm the amount

Once logged in, you'll typically be shown the payment amount and merchant name pre-filled, and asked to pick which of your accounts to pay from (if you have more than one). Double-check the amount and the merchant name shown here match what you expected before approving.

Step 5 — Approve the payment

You confirm the payment inside your bank's own interface — this might involve a second authentication step such as a text message code or an app-based approval, depending on your bank's security setup. Once approved, the transfer is initiated.

Step 6 — Get redirected back and wait for confirmation

After approval, your bank sends you back to the merchant's site, and POLi relays a success message. Most payments confirm within a minute or two, though the underlying funds movement follows ordinary interbank settlement timing behind the scenes. Keep an eye on your bank statement for the matching debit as your own record of the transaction.

What to check specifically before trying this at a casino

Because we couldn't verify casino-side acceptance at the time of writing, if you do come across a casino that appears to list POLi, run through this before depositing:

  • Confirm the POLi option is on the real, logged-in cashier screen, not just the marketing homepage.
  • Check the operator's licence details and read independent complaint history if you can find it.
  • Start with the smallest deposit the casino allows, rather than committing a large amount on the first try.
  • Read the operator's own withdrawal policy before depositing — a payment method being accepted in doesn't guarantee money can come back out the same way; see our page on POLi casino withdrawals.
  • Keep a screenshot or record of the transaction confirmation in case you need to raise a dispute later.

Troubleshooting common issues

SymptomLikely causeWhat to try
Your bank doesn't appear in the listNo active open-banking agreement between POLi and your bank for this merchantUse a different payment method, or a manual bank transfer
Payment fails after you approve itDaily transfer limit exceeded, or a temporary bank-side holdCheck your banking app's limit settings, or try a smaller amount
You're redirected but the merchant shows "pending" for a long timeConfirmation message delayed between bank and merchant systemsWait a short while and check your bank statement before retrying, to avoid a duplicate payment
The merchant says it never received the paymentPossible mismatch in reference details, or the payment was declined by your bank silentlyCheck your bank statement first; if debited but not received, contact the merchant with your bank's transaction reference

After you deposit

Keep your own record: a screenshot of the confirmation screen, the amount, the date, and the merchant name. If you ever need to query a payment with your bank or raise a dispute, these details make the process much faster. If the deposit was for gambling purposes, it's also worth setting yourself a limit before you start playing — see our responsible gambling guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to create a POLi account first?

No. POLi doesn't require you to sign up or hold an account with it in advance. You simply select it at checkout and authenticate through your own bank at the time of payment.

What if my bank isn't listed in the POLi bank selection screen?

If your bank doesn't appear, POLi doesn't have an active open-banking agreement with it for that merchant, and you won't be able to complete the payment that way. You'd need to use a different payment method or a manual transfer instead.

Can I cancel a POLi payment partway through?

Yes. Until you actually approve the payment inside your bank's own login screen, you can back out or close the window and nothing is charged. Once you've approved it in your banking session, treat it as final, in the same way you would a completed bank transfer.

Why does the checkout send me to my bank's actual website?

That's intentional and is the security feature, not a bug. Modern POLi uses accredited open-banking APIs, so you authenticate on your own bank's genuine site or app rather than typing your banking password into a page controlled by POLi or the merchant.
